Lactation Support

What is the difference between a lactation consultant & a lactation or breastfeeding counselor?

There are so many certifications and designations around lactation education and support, it's easy to become confused about who does what. The primary differences between a lactation consultant with the designation, IBCLC (International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants) and a lactation counselor (CLC, CLE, WIC peer breastfeeding counselor) are training and scope of practice.

With respect to training, IBCLCs complete general education requirements, 90 hours of lactation-specific education, and clinical hours. There are numerous routes to becoming a certified lactation educator or counselor, and as such the training experiences are also varied. If you are considering working with a lactation educator or consultant, ask about the training she received for her particular designation.
With respect to scope of practice, IBCLCs provide support to all women, including those experiencing  difficulties with breastfeeding that fall outside of the range of "common" problems, whereas counselors provide education and support for women experiencing the most common breastfeeding problems. IBCLCs also conduct maternal and child assessments, something that is not within the scope of practice of a lactation counselor.
